Rochester Welcomes 2,200 High School Students to Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center

Annual DECA conference returns to Rochester for 19th consecutive year

Rochester, N.Y., March 9, 2016 – Visit Rochester and the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center will welcome more than 2,200 attendees of the New York State Distributive Education Clubs of America’s (DECA) Annual State Career Conference (SCC) to Rochester beginning today.

This year’s conference, taking place March 9-11, 2016, marks the 19th consecutive year that Rochester has hosted DECA’s annual conference.

“Visit Rochester is thrilled to welcome student attendees of DECA back to Rochester,” said Deidre Wetelainen, vice president, sales and convention services, Visit Rochester. “The strong partnership our sales team enjoys with the staff at the Convention Center continues to prove successful in attracting and retaining meetings and conventions like DECA for our community.”

DECA is a student organization whose program of leadership and personal development is designed specifically for high school students interested in marketing, management and entrepreneurship. Over the course of the conference, students will compete in a variety of events designed to test their skills in fields ranging from financing to hospitality to advertising and many other categories involving marketing and business. Over 100 businesses executives from the Rochester community, as well as from the Buffalo and Syracuse area, are volunteering their time to judge the competition.

Students competing in this week’s event have the opportunity to advance to the International Career Development Conference, taking place next month in Nashville.

Conference attendees will be staying at five different hotels across Rochester, including the Radisson Rochester Riverside, Hyatt Regency Rochester, Hilton Garden Inn Downtown, Holiday Inn Downtown and the DoubleTree Hotel Rochester.

“What attracts a group like DECA to Rochester includes the convenience and security of having two hotels directly connected to our convention facility,” said Kris Hughes, director of sales, Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center. “That’s in addition to the level of service and attention to detail DECA conference organizers have come to expect from the convention center and Visit Rochester staff.”

This conference is not open to the public and is exclusively for New York State DECA students.
