Those looking to explore Rochester on two wheels will find plenty of options and resources. Rochester has previously been awarded a bronze-level status as a Bike-Friendly City by the League of American Bicyclists. So whether your bike is taking you across the 64 lane miles of paved urban oasis or supporting you as you catch your breath on the many forested paths, Rochester, NY is a dream destination for all bikers.

Best Spots for Biking in Rochester

Cyclists visiting Rochester will find multiple places to ride, with trails, paths, and routes for riders of every level.

The Genesee Riverway Trail is a 24-mile long, scenic, multi-use trail that runs through Rochester alongside the Genesee River. It extends through the scenic, historic and cultural heart of Rochester, from the Erie Canal to downtown and Lake Ontario. Be sure to take the Riverway Trail into the heart of downtown Rochester for stunning views.

One of the most popular options for cyclists in the Rochester area is the Erie Canalway Trail. The trail (which is part of the Empire State Trail system) runs alongside the Erie Canal, with multiple access points throughout Monroe County. The Erie Canal is ideal for a leisurely spin with wide, flat, safe, and open paths that run along the canal side through parks and villages.

Pass through historic towns, over rivers, and across woodlands when you steer your cycle to the Genesee Valley Greenway. Crushed stone trails and tons of tree cover make it a perfect spot for all kinds of rides.

Watch for ducks and swans as you bike across the scenic boardwalk which helps you over the Genesee River at Turning Point Park. Nature-enthusiasts can continue on dirt and paved paths to explore even more woods and wildlife.

In search of more bike-related fun? The Rochester Bicycling Club helps plan events, advocate for cyclists, and educate the public about bikes and bike safety. Check their calendar to learn about local rides where you can connect with other cyclists and explore new trails.
