More than 2,000 Delegates Meet in Rochester for 2016 NYSUT Convention

Representatives of one of largest teachers' unions in the country meet to advocate for public education

Rochester, N.Y., April 7, 2016 –Visit Rochester is pleased to welcome the annual convention of the New York State United Teachers  (NYSUT) to Rochester, returning to our area for the first time in ten years. NYSUT represents more than 600,000 people who work in, or are retired from, New York's schools, colleges, and healthcare facilities.

More than 2,000 attendees from across the state will convene in Rochester April 8-9. At this year’s 44th annual NYSUT Representative Assembly, union delegates will meet to advocate for public education, discuss issues and set policy that determines the programs and services NYSUT will provide to members for the following year.

The NYSUT meeting is considered a “city-wide” event, as attendees will occupy over 1,200 hotel rooms across the city and into the suburbs. Meeting spaces used for this meeting include the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center and six local hotels.

“We’re pleased  NYSUT has chosen to hold its annual convention in Rochester,” said Don Jeffries, president & CEO, Visit Rochester. “Hosting a group of this size in our community is a positive thing for our hotels and restaurants, and we’re thrilled to welcome NYSUT’s 2,000 plus members to Rochester and Monroe County.”

Visit Rochester has a dedicated meeting and convention sales team focused entirely on bringing meetings and events - such as NYSUT - to Rochester. The estimated economic impact of the tourism and hospitality industry in Monroe County in 2014 was over $1 billion. Visitors brought to town through meetings and conventions comprise a significant portion of that overall economic impact.
