Visitors Experience Cutting-Edge Science in 3-D on New Interactive Globe at Rochester Museum & Science Center

ROCHESTER, NY-Visitors to the Rochester Museum & Science Center have the RMSC globeextraordinary opportunity to engage in an immersive science experience starting August 28. Science On a Sphere® (SOS) is an interactive globe and three-dimensional data projection system that transforms to showcase such natural phenomena as atmospheric storms and planetary features in high-resolution. A focal point of the RMSC's new Data Theater, SOS will open on the second floor in the re-created Schuyler C. Townson Research Library reading room.
"We are delighted to share Science On a Sphere with the community and have our guests explore Earth and space science in ways that are highly visual and engaging," said Dan Menelly, chief program officer for science and technology, RMSC.
In stunning detail and accuracy, guests will experience real-time data through specially developed planetary and Earth science demonstrations presented in three dimensions. In addition to celestial activity, SOS will reveal patterns in data on a global scale, including striking graphic representations of the paths of storms, changes in ocean temperature and other phenomena. The data involved is frequently the product of technologies developed in the Rochester research and innovation communities. The SOS project was funded by generous donors from the last two RMSC Innovation Celebration galas.

Science On a Sphere was developed by researchers at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) as a visualization tool to help illustrate Earth and space sciences to people of all ages and backgrounds.
Admission to Science On a Sphere is included in regular Museum admission. Regular Museum admission is $13 adults, $12 seniors and college students with ID, $11 ages 3 to 18, free for RMSC members and children under 3. For group reservations and rates, call 585.697.1942. SOS will be open daily. Visit www.rmsc.org for hours and other details.
