Yayoi Kusama has been recognized globally as one of the most important artists of our time. Her work has been displayed across 23 countries, and one of her immersive installations is in Rochester!

The Memorial Art Gallery presents Kusama’s INFINITY MIRRORED ROOM – LET’S SURVIVE FOREVER, 2017, on loan for a limited time from the Art Gallery of Ontario.

About the Artist

Born in Japan in 1929, Kusama experienced visual and auditory hallucinations at a young age that sparked her creativity as an artist. What started as creating polka-dot pattern pictures has grown into paintings, sculptures, and immersive installations that incorporate mirrors and lights. Informing Kusama’s work throughout her career has been her artistic philosophy of self-obliteration through the excessive repetition and multiplication of single motifs. Come explore a piece of her fascinating imagination through her INFINITY MIRRORED ROOM – LET’S SURVIVE FOREVER installation.

The Experience

In groups of up to four, guests spend 60 seconds within INFINITY MIRRORED ROOM – LET’S SURVIVE FOREVER, admiring what appears to be an infinite field of silver orbs suspended from the ceiling and placed around the floor. Everyone experiences the installation differently: some take selfies; others take it all in peacefully, noting a reflective, Zen-like moment. Based on a sense of magic and wonder, some visitors return to explore the installation more than once!

Represent: Great Women Artists at MAG

To accompany the Kusama installation, MAG organized, Represent: Great Women Artists at MAG, an exhibition that runs until April 14, 2024. Represent highlights MAG’s first Kusama sculpture acquisition, along with the work of exceptional female artists from the museum’s permanent collection. But don’t stop there! Pick up a scavenger hunt and guide map at admissions to help you discover other works by women artists on view across all of MAG’s collections.
