Rochester, NY is proud to be hosting the 2025 Special Olympics New York State Winter Games on February 21 and 22. This weekend marks the first in a three-year run of Winter Games set to take place at various venues around the Rochester area, and we can’t wait to see what excitement these athletes have in store for us!
The mission behind the Special Olympics can be summarized in two words: inclusivity and empowerment. The organization works to provide year-round athletic training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
Through the medium of sports, athletes are empowered to develop their physical fitness while also building courage and fostering a strong community with their fellow Special Olympics athletes.
This year’s Winter Games will bring around 900 athletes along with their coaches, families, and fans to Rochester where we will kick off with the Opening Ceremonies at 7:00pm this Friday, February 21.
Taking place at the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center, the Opening Ceremonies will also include the award ceremony for the 2024 Outstanding Coach of the Year.
Then on Saturday the 22, the games begin! The tentative schedule is as follows
- 8:30 am - Floorball - Nazareth Golisano Training Center
- 9:00 am - Alpine Skiing & Snowboarding - Swain Ski Resort
- 9:00 am - Cross Country Skiing - Bristol Mountain
- 9:30 am - Snowshoeing - Rochester Community Sports Complex
- 10:00 am - Figure Skating - Tim Horton’s Iceplex
- 12:00 pm - Gymnastics - Town of Henrietta Recreation Department
- 5:30 pm – 6:45 pm - Victory Dinner – Joseph A. Floreano Riverside Convention Center
- 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm - Olympic Village- Healthy Athletes – Joseph A. Floreano Riverside Convention Center
- 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm - Closing Ceremonies and Victory Dance – Joseph A. Floreano Riverside Convention Center
