Suggested Group Tour Itinerary - Rochester, NY

Rochester, New York is home to the Eastman School of Music, Garth Fagan Dance, Geva Theatre, the Hochstein School of Music and Dance and the Rochester City Ballet. Music, dance and theatre are celebrated weekly with concerts, dance festivals, plays and musicals throughout the city!  Here is a suggested itinerary and a list of some favorite theatre, music and dance options that you can enjoy throughout the year.  Don't forget the famous Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival held every June! Rochester promises to deliver a memorable experience for you, your family and friends.

Day 1:

Visit the beautiful, historic Hochstein School of Music and Dance  . The mission of the David Hochstein Memorial Music School is to provide our community with excellent music and dance education in an environment which nurtures and encourages personal achievement for anyone regardless of family income level, age, background or ability.  Your visit will be tailor-made to suit the interests of your group.  Your group can join the audience for a high caliber live musical broadcast from the Hochstein Performance Hall. Now in its 36th year, it is the longest running live radio broadcast in western New York. After the performance, get a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into a radio broadcast from the set up to the tear down in the onsite sound studio.

Lunch at Pomodoro - Pomodoro is a local restaurant that strives to use organically grown and all natural meats and produce by local farmers, when available and in season. They make their pizza crust and pasta fresh daily. During the summer, enjoy outdoor dining on the deck at their University Avenue location.

Next, introduce your group to the Eastman School of Music Organ Initiative. Rochester is fast becoming the pipe organ capital of North America. Crowing the collection is the Craighead-Saunders Organ at Christ Church, a replica of an 18th century organ built by Adam Gottlob Casparini for the Holy Ghost Church in Vilnius, Lithuania. Accompanied by an Eastman School of Music staff member, your group will be allowed inside the instrument for a closer look at the pipes and playing mechanisms.

Enjoy a matinee or evening performance at the Nazareth College Arts Center. It's a premier center for world class dance and international entertainment. The Nazareth College Arts Center Dance Festival, held every July, kicks off with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra Dance Festival Overture featuring guest dancers.  There are all styles of dance throughout the festival from visiting troupes and award winning choreographers.  Dance companies perform all genres of dance including modern, experimental, Latino, contemporary, jazz, multi genre and the iconic classic contemporary repertoire of the likes of the Martha Graham Dance Company.  Nazareth College Arts Center is the year-round performance home of the Rochester City Ballet and Garth Fagan Dance.  Check out the latest schedule online and enjoy the show!

The Rochester City Ballet (RCB) is a contemporary ballet company based in Rochester, NY.  It boasts a growing reputation for excellence, versatility and singular repertoire which includes award winning ballets and masterworks. Many productions are presented with live music and artistic collaborations of musicians and ensembles. Participate in their unique "In Studio" series where you can meet and greet the staff, dancers and visiting artists up close -- right in the studio!  RCB is also planning a regional tour in the 2012/2013 season.  Be sure to check them out for a memorable performance!

Garth Fagan Dance  - Recently celebrating its 40th season, The New York Times deems Garth Fagan Dance "unfailingly original." Tony award-winning Lion King Choreographer Garth Fagan's "fearless" dancers are "able to sustain long adagio balances, to change direction in mid-air, to vary the dynamic of a turn, to stop on a dime," wrote David Vaughan in Ballet Review. The Company has been cited for its excellence and originality with a New York Governor's Arts Award and has claimed five "Bessie" Awards. Take a behind the scene look at their studio or schedule your visit ding one of the company's performances.

Take in an evening concert at the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO), performed in Kodak Hall of the Eastman Theatre. Committed to enriching and inspiring our community through the art of music, it is one of the great American orchestras, and is recognized nationally for artistic and organizational excellence, creativity, and innovation.

Dinner at Eros Restaurant - Enjoy fine Greek & Italian cuisine in an inviting and casual environment. Eros is conveniently located in downtown Rochester, close to the Eastman School of Music, Geva Theatre and Garth Fagan Dance Studios.

Day 2:

Breakfast at Jines Restaurant - Located in the cultural, historic Park Avenue area of Rochester, Jines is a popular meeting spot for business associates, and families with kids. You can even find the Mayor or County executive sometimes dining at this 2nd generation family owned restaurant.  Jines' friendly staff serves up breakfast, lunch or dinner any time of day with healthy and dietary conscience menu items available.

Enjoy shopping in the eclectic Park Avenue area with friendly merchants including Stevers Candies, a shop for homemade chocolates, or fabulous shoes at A Step Apart and other unique shopping experiences, such as Parkleigh, with its collection of McKenzie-Childs and Vera Bradley merchandise.

For cultural and historical experiences, visit the Memorial Art Gallery known to house the most comprehensive collection in New York State outside of Manhattan; or enter the world of photography and film at the Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film. Experience the 1905 estate of George Eastman, the father of popular photography and motion picture film. This Beautifully restored mansion is now a National Historic Landmark.

Lunch at Genesee Brew House, located in the historic High Falls district, this restaurant offer a stunning view of the nearby High Falls. It was here that Rochester became the major flour making center in the 1800's as water from the falls was used to power the mills.

TheatreRocs! - Check out this fabulous schedule for all kinds of matinee and evening theatre performances!  Formed in the fall of 2008, TheatreROCS is an alliance of over two dozen theatre arts companies supported by an excess of 250,000 arts patrons in and around Rochester. TheatreROCS is dedicated to unifying the vast and varied theatre companies of the Rochester area and provide a central source for theatre news and information. Look for our performance schedules in the playbills of every participating member and visit this site often for up to date performance schedules and information.

Rochester Broadway Theatre League at the Auditorium Theatre - Check out the latest Broadway musicals and playbill events that are performed in this beautiful, historic theatre near downtown Rochester.  The selection is popular, entertaining and a real crowd pleaser!

The Rochester Fringe Festival opens in September.  This annual event features 180 shows at 21 venues and offers visitors the very best in music, dance and the arts.

Ganondagan - Celebrate Native American music and dance at the annual Native American Music and Dance Festival at Ganondagan every July.  Ganondagan is a New York State Historic site dedicated to honor the Seneca Nation that lived here peacefully before they were destroyed by the 1687 invasion by the French commander, Denonville.  It is popular with families and children who enjoy learning the native music and dance in an authentic setting!

Evening of theatre at Geva Theatre Center - Rochester's leading professional theatre, it has been at the cultural heart of the Genesee Valley for 39 years. Offering the very best in live theatre, from fresh looks at classics and musicals, to lively comedies and powerful, thought-provoking dramas, Geva is the most attended regional theatre outside of NYC.

Dinner at Tavern 58  - Enjoy a rotating selection of "tavern plates" featuring old fashion tavern fare.  Open late after your evening performance.
