Visit Rochester Statement on Performing Arts Center Announcement

Friday, April 7, 2017 11:00 AM by Visit Rochester

Today it was announced that the Golisano Center for the Performing Arts is the City of Rochester's selection for the development of Parcel 5 at Midtown.

Visit Rochester enthusiastically shares its support of this announcement. The construction of a new performing arts center in the heart of downtown Rochester will significantly impact the tourism industry in Rochester and Monroe County.

Visit Rochester President & CEO Don Jeffries offered the following comments on today’s announcement:

“We are thrilled to one day welcome visitors to the Golisano Center for the Performing Arts in the middle of the redevelopment in downtown Rochester. In its planned location, the performing arts center will be just steps away from the Convention Center and downtown hotels, meaning that scores of visitors will be in close proximity to a wide variety of theatre and entertainment. In addition to visitors to downtown, the new performing arts center will benefit numerous downtown businesses, including restaurants and retailers.

“A strong arts and cultural product is one of Rochester’s defining features as a tourism destination, and the new performing arts center will only further our community’s reputation as the arts and cultural capital of upstate New York.

“The new performing arts center will provide new opportunities for the meetings and convention business, as Rochester has never before had the availability of theatre style seating just steps from the Convention Center. Having this new amenity enhances our convention product and will open Rochester up to a whole new market, such as stockholder and sales meetings.”

Tourism is a major economic driver in Monroe County. Tourism activities in Monroe County generated an economic impact of more than 1 billion dollars in 2015.
