The summer months of 2017 have proven to be a very busy time for Visit Rochester’s meeting and convention sales and services team. Rochester has been the site of a major convention or event nearly every weekend this summer. Some of the larger conventions that have taken place in Rochester include the Christian Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses (5,000 visitors over two weekends), Church Ushers Association of New York State (1,200 visitors), Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church (500 visitors), Empire Baptist Missionary Convention of New York (1,600 visitors) and the Northeast Chapter of the American Association of Airport Executives (350 visitors).
In addition to these convening groups, Visit Rochester will welcome thousands of additional convention attendees between now and Labor Day. The Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry meets in Rochester August 25-30 and will attract 2,500 visitors to Rochester, and the Drum Corps Associates (DCA) World Championships returns to Rochester September 1-3, bringing 7,500 people to downtown Rochester.
Meetings and conventions play a critical role in the overall economic impact of the tourism and hospitality industry in Monroe County. Attendees represent visitors from outside of our community staying in our hotels, dining in our restaurants and visiting some of our area’s top attractions. Visit Rochester estimates that the average meeting or convention delegate or exhibitor will spend anywhere from $310-$450 per day in the community. In 2016, the total economic impact of the hospitality and tourism industry in Monroe County exceeded $1 billion.
