An opportunity for kids to explore the world of rocks and minerals. The gem show offers demonstrations of gem cutting, glass bead making, mineral bingo, a gem sluice, soapstone carving, a straw draw ,with rock prizes and much more!
The Rochester Gem, Mineral, Jewelry and Fossil Show and Sale is MOVING. The activities and vendors that you know and enjoy have found a new home at Total Sports Experience, 435 W Commercial St., East Rochester (just off Interstate 490). Adults $6, kids under 12 free with adult, 2 day pass, $9.
Kids can watch professional carver Sandy Cline work, then try their hand at carving soapstone into animals or arrowheads. Mineral Bingo is a fun way to learn a little science about the uses, shapes and colors of specific minerals. Shelden Studios will have a hot glass demonstration, showing how beads can be made by hand.
Special Exhibit: "Thinking Outside the Jewelry Box; Inner Space", features local craftsmen using rocks in their art projects; then, everyone gets to vote for the one they like best.
Kids from RochesterRocks!, a rock club associated with the Brockport Schools, will exhibit "Three things about my Favorite Rock". Sponsored by the Rochester Lapidary Society, these students have been earning merit badges around geology, and are well on their way to being recognized as Junior Rockhounds!
There are all kinds of specimens for beginning and advanced collectors; beads to make your own necklaces, craft supplies, jewelry of all kinds, ethnic, antique or modern; geodes which can be opened on site, lights made of salt. You can buy a slice of dinosaur tooth, or a fossil dino bone. Our vendors have wonderful things from around the world. Try you hand at mining at the gem sluice, you always strike it rich, or buy a straw at the straw draw and see if you won a polished rock or one of the grand prizes. This is a fun and educational way to spend a few family hours.
