Stare Conducts Shostakovich 5

The year: 1936. After his opera, Lady Macbeth, is denounced as “anti-Soviet,” Shostakovich’s fate rides on the success of his next composition. The ensuing Fifth Symphony is a paragon of music’s power to express beyond the notes, at once brutal, mournful, and triumphant—with a side of sarcasm. A monumental evening also features the “liquid gold” (The Times) soprano of opera star Nicole Cabell, winner of the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition.
