Live from Hochstein: Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra

Musicians from the 80-member Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra, directed by Casey Springstead, perform a special concert for The Hochstein School’s free Live from Hochstein concert series, featuring music by Mendelssohn, Enescu, Gwyneth Walker, and John Williams. Part of Hochstein’s Centennial Celebration!
The program includes Open the Door, a short orchestral overture by American composer Gwyneth Walker, written in 1990 for The Women's Orchestra; Felix Mendelssohn’s stormy Hebrides Overture, also known as “Fingal’s Cave,” inspired by a trip to Scotland; George Enescu’s exciting Romanian Rhapsody No. 1 in A major; and a suite of John Williams’ music for the 1972 western The Cowboys, which starred John Wayne in one of his last roles.

The HYSO is a full orchestra for advanced strings, brass, woodwinds, and percussion students in grades 7–12 from the greater Rochester region. The HYSO presents three concerts per year along with periodic international tours including a 2016 tour of Austria and Germany, a 2018 tour of Portugal and Spain, and the April 2020 tour of Germany and the Czech Republic.

The Hochstein School’s free lunchtime “brown bag” Live from Hochstein concert series takes place in the Hochstein Performance Hall and is broadcast live on WXXI Classical 91.5/ 90.3 FM, hosted by Classical 91.5’s Mona Seghatoleslami.
