BROKEN GLASS, written in 1994, was one of the last plays Miller wrote. Many theatre critics, past and present, believe Miller used this writing to question his own identity as a Jew, as a man, as a husband, and as a father. The play is set in Brooklyn November, 1938 as the German Nazis begin the harassment of Jews living in Berlin. This oppression is known as Krystallnacht—BROKEN GLASS. Today, Kristallnacht is seen as the first act of what would eventually become the Holocaust. But did America and the world see the writing on the wall in 1938?
